Women in STEM

IF SHE CAN SEE IT, THEN SHE CAN BE IT

IF/THEN® empowers STEM innovators and drives cultural change so the next generation is inspired to solve our biggest global challenges.

Powered by Lyda Hill Philanthropies, IF/THEN® provides critical funding and connects cross-sector partners to amplify STEM role model storytelling so girls can image—and achieve—their own STEM dreams.

In just five years, hundreds of real-life STEM superheroes have totally changed the game. Textbooks, museum halls, classroom walls—you name it—now show the faces and stories of these trailblazers. Women with seriously cool science jobs are inspiring millions weekly on TV, streaming, and social media. From the top STEM show on broadcast television to the largest collection of women statues ever, IF/THEN® sparked a movement. Let’s keep the energy alive until everyone knows they belong in STEM and can use it to change the world.

#IfThenSheCan – The Exhibit

Largest collection of women statues ever assembled

A 2016 study led by former Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios found that the 10 largest U.S. cities publicly displayed fewer than a half-dozen statues of real women altogether. Women also make up less than 30% of today’s STEM workforce—could there be a connection?  Who we choose to honor with a statue says a lot about our culture’s values.

This monumental exhibit of 120 life-size 3-D printed statues celebrates contemporary women innovators in STEM and features the most statues of real women ever assembled together. Experienced by 4 million people since its launch in 2020, all statues that make up the Exhibit have been displayed together during two full exhibits – one at NorthPark Center in Dallas in 2021 and the other at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC in March of 2022.  Eleven ‘pop-up’ exhibits have made it possible for visitors to experience #IfThenSheCan – The Exhibit from Texas to New York City.

Hello Sunshine

Impact

IF/THEN® and Hello Sunshine, a part of Candle Media, are developing and producing storytelling centered around women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This partnership is on a mission to inspire the next generation of women and girls in STEM with authentic, relatable role models on screen. AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassadors

Impact

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) brought STEM role models into the spotlight with the AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassadors program! This groundbreaking initiative brought together 125 incredible women from all corners of STEM—think tech whizzes, engineering innovators, medical trailblazers, and more—to shine as high-profile role models for middle school girls.

By amplifying their amazing stories, these STEM superstars helped girls envision paths for themselves in STEM and showed them STEM exists far beyond the classroom—it’s everywhere, and it’s shaping the world around us. Ambassadors also received public engagement training to supercharge their communication skills, as well as grants to bring their passion projects to life and ignite a love for STEM in the next generation of changemakers and innovators.
